Abruzzi Chamois

Scientific Classification

zoomAll the animals and vegetables species have a scientific classification. To individualize a species, at first we indicate the genus and after the species (individuals who have the same caratteristics).
The Abruzzi chamois belongs to the Rupicapra genus.

The Rupicapra genus is subdivided in 2 species: Rupicapra rupicapra (from which the Chamois of North-Oriental Europe and Asia Minor belong) and Rupicapra pyrenaica (they are the chamois of South-Western Europe).
The Rupicapra rupicapra genus includes 7 subspecies:

  • Rupicapra rupicapra rupicapra (it's the alpin chamois)
  • Rupicapra rupicapra cartusiana (it lives on Chatreuse mountains, in France)
  • Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica (of Tatra mount, North Europe)
  • Rupicapra rupicapra asiatica (of Turkey)
  • Rupicapra rupicapra carpatica
  • Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica
  • Rupicapra rupicapra caucasica

The Rupicapra pyrenaica species is -instead- subdivided in 3 subspecies:

  • Rupicapra pyrenaica ornata (it's the Abruzzi chamois)
  • Rupicapra rupicapra parva (the chamois of Cantabrice mounts, in Spain)
  • Rupicapra rupicapra pyrenaica (the chamois of the Pyrenees
As you can see, the Abruzzi chamois rises from a different species of Alpine. The difference consists in the colour of the winter coat (in the Rupicapra rupicapra rupicapra the coat is more dark) and in the summary coat (in the Abruzzi chamois it's more red), in the phisical structure and in the manner.
The exstraordinary design of the coat, its splendids horus, the agility and the elegance of its movements have defined -rigthly- the Abruzzi chamois as "the most beatiful chamois of the world".
